Various Psoriasis Treatments Offer Relief

A number of psoriasis treatments have helped persons who suffer from this chronic skin condition. Among these are topical treatments such as corticosteroids, tree bark extract, tars, retinoid, and essential oils.

For more severe psoriasis conditions that may not respond to topical treatment, oral drugs or injections may be prescribed by a dermatologist.

Another area of psoriasis treatment revolves around Vitamin D and its ability to slow down skin cell production and reduce inflammation.

The best way to address your psoriasis condition depends on the type of psoriasis you have, your skin type, and any other health or medical issues you are facing. The various treatments have their positive and negative points.

What works for one person may not work for another. That is why we encourage you to do your due diligence. Learn as much as possible about your skin type and skin condition. With so much information available within seconds on the Internet, there is no reason you shouldn’t know a great deal about what makes your condition worse, and what makes it better.

By the same token we encourage you, especially if you suffer from a severe case of psoriasis, to discuss the use of any treatment approach with your dermatologist or family physician.

The best way to discuss your health with your doctor is to know a whole lot about your condition and the treatment options available to you before you speak to her or him. A little knowledge will help you ask your doctor the right questions and address the particulars of your personal skin condition much more effectively.

8 Common Psoriasis Treatments

The following list of psoriasis treatments may give you a better idea of what might work best for you:

Corticosteroids - These drugs are applied topically and include clobetasol, fluocinolone, and betamethasone. They are commonly used in the initial treatment of psoriasis and vary in strength, depending on the severity of the condition. They should be used with care as they come with their set of drawbacks, including the following: may change skin color; may thin the skin, may cause bruising of the skin; may become ineffective after prolonged use.

Tree Bark Extract Also known as anthralin, is an effective topical treatment that comes in a variety of forms, lotion, cream, ointment, and paste. It can appear under the names  Anthra-Derm, Dithranol, Drithocreme, and Micanol. It is a messy option, however, and oftem leaves skin and clothing stained.

Tars – Purified tars are preferred as they minimize odor and messiness of products such as Theraplex T, Doak Tar, and other lotions, gels, creams, and ointments. These products, when applied topically, help diminish itchiness and the production of skin cells and inflammation.

Retinoid – The topical retinoid, Tazarotene (Tazorac), is derivative of Vitamin A. When applied as a cream or gel, it has been shown to reduce redness in the skin and the size of psoriasis patches. It has proved most effective for treating scalp psoriasis. As with all Vitamin A derivatives used topically, caution should be exercised to limit sun exposure to treated areas of skin, as retinols have been known to make skin particularly sensitive to ultraviolet rays and more vulnerable to long term skin damage.

Essential Oils These 100% natural products contain a variety of pure natural essential oils  extracted from plants. Many users have found these essential oils to be effective in treating all types of psoriasis without any of the drawbacks of some of the other treatments listed in this article. Because these oils are fat soluble, they are quickly absorbed into the blood stream and taken into the immune system without having their potency stripped by the  kidneys and digestive system.

Oral Drugs – Prescribed oral drugs are used for more severe cases of psoriasis or where topical psoriasis treatments have failed. Some of the more common psoriasis drugs include: methoxsalen, trioxsalen, tegison (Vitamin A derivative), cycloporine, alefacept, etanercept (used specifically to treat psoriatic arthritis), and methotrexate (an anti-cancer drug also used to treat plaque psoriasis and arthritis).

Ultraviolet Light – We know that too much unprotected exposure to sunlight leads to long term skin damage, drying and thinning of skin, premature aging in the form of wrinkles and fine lines, and potentially skin cancer. But about 15 minutes a day of exposure to the sun, without sunscreen, helps your body manufacture the Vitamin D that is necessary  for healthy skin. The Vitamin D antioxidant is a potent anti-carcinogen. It also helps alleviate psoriasis by slowing the production of skin cells and reducing skin inflammation.

Vitamin D – See previous item, Ultraviolet Light. Vitamin D is critical for healthy skin and has been shown to be especially effective in treating psoriasis by virtue of its ability to slow skin cell production and reduce inflammation. Vitamin D also enhances the absorption of Vitamin A and Vitamin C, both of which are enormously important in maintaining healthy skin structure and preventing skin damage and disease, as well as premature aging of the skin. The Vitamin D-3 derivative, Calcipotriene (Dovonex), is often used in cream or ointment form in moderate cases to treat psoriasis rashes.

Home Remedy Psoriasis Treatment

As with any skin condition, it is important, now more than ever, for you to learn all you can about your skin and what makes your skin less healthy or more healthy. Doctors play an important role in the health of your skin, and they should be consulted, especially in severe or extreme cases. But to ask the right questions you need to do your due diligence and spend some time reading and researching your skin ailment, whether that be psoriasis, eczema, acne, or any other condition that is affecting your quality of life.

If you feel any of the above psoriasis treatments might be right for you, we encourage you to look more deeply into it. If you have doubts, talk to your dermatologist, ask her or him lots of questions.

For most persons, it is best to begin with the less aggressive, over-the-counter topical treatments. We prefer the natural essential oils approach that many have used with success.
