Healthy Skin with the Right Minerals

Having Healthy Skin Is Easy for Some People

Everyone’s skin is different from everyone else’s. What works for some people doesn’t work for others.

And factors that can trigger skin flare-ups in persons susceptible to acne, eczema, psoriasis, or other skin conditions, may have no effect whatsoever on other persons.

If you have problem skin, or overly sensitive skin, or dry, prematurely aging skin, or skin that is prone to redness, swelling itchiness, and overall irritation, it is in your best interest to educate yourself.

Learn about all the ways to give your skin a strong foundation from which significant improvement can be achieved gradually over time.

The health of your skin is a reflection of your internal health. For example, if you eat something that distresses your digestive system, that distress will be manifested in some form in your skin.

An example would be someone who is allergic to shellfish sitting down to a nice dinner at a great seafood restaurant, having a sleepless night because of stomach discomfort, and waking up to an inflamed itchy eczema patch on his wrist.

Most Ingredients Your Stomach Dislikes Are Bad for Your Skin

By the same token, a deficiency of what your body needs, certain vitamins or minerals, say, will be manifested by a deterioration in your skin, such as in the form of excessive dryness, wrinkles and fine lines, or any other skin disorder.

When your inside reacts to a food or ingredient in a negative way, it tries to detoxify it. That’s why you feel bloated or gassy, or uncomfortable. The toxicity seeps to the skin through your blood. The skin, being the largest organ of your body, tries to detoxify the toxins that have resulted from what you ingested. This causes distress to your skin, which reacts by being out of balance – thus the irritations, swelling, and so on.

Studies have shown that antioxidants contained in many foods and vitamins, when combined with a proper diet and exercise regimen, can help detoxify the body and rejuvenate and repair damaged skin, making it not only healthy skin, but more attractive and more youthful skin.

The potent antioxidants in some vitamins help promote healthy skin. The ones proven over time to help improve the health, feel, and appearance of human skin are the B Complex Vitamins along with Vitamins A, C, E, and K. For an iin-depth discussion of these vitamins and skin health, see our article, Vitamins for Skin – Choosing the Right Ones.

Best Minerals for Healthy Skin

Minerals are often forgotten in discussions about skin health, so we’ll address three very important ones here:

  • Selenium - Research has revealed that selenium plays an important role in preventing skin cancer and in protecting the skin from sun damage.  It can be taken as a supplement or included as an ingredient in skin cream formulations. Good natural sources of selenium are whole grains, eggs, garlic, and seafood.

  • Copper - Copper plays a role in the development of elastin, those fibers that support skin structure and allow the skin to be supple and firm (i.e., younger, fresher). Copper is often used in combination with Vitamin C and zinc to enhance its skin-friendly properties.

  • Zinc - Zinc has been used with some success to treat acne. In some cases acne can be an indicator that the sufferer is deficient in zinc. Zinc can be taken as a supplement or applied topically on the skin. Zinc helps regulate the production of sebum, or skin oil. Excess sebum leads to clogged pores, larger pores, and a greater susceptibility to develop pimples and blackheads. By keeping sebum production to a normal level, zinc can help control the development of lesions associated with acne and clear them more rapidly. Lean meat, poultry, and oysters are abundant in zinc.

Mineral Deficiencies Can Lead to Skin Disorders

Deficiencies in any of these minerals can lead to any number of skin problems.

Their presence in the right levels will strengthen your skin from the inside out. It will keep your skin in its proper balance and make it more resistant to skin conditions such as acne, eczema, psoriasis, and dermatitis.

These minerals will also help fight premature aging of the skin, and the excess dryness,  sagging, wrinkling, fine lines, age spots, hyper pigmentation, and dark circles under the eyes that come with weakened, aging skin.

We are not talking overnight improvements, despite what some skin care product companies might have you believe. Minerals (and vitamins) that have been shown over time to repair and rejuvenate damaged skin are just one weapon in your arsenal in the battle to reduce or eliminate bad skin and replace it with new, radiant, healthy skin. Their effect is best measured over a period of sustained use.

3-Pronged Approach to Skin Care

Of course, we always emphasize a 3-pronged approach to skin care, beginning with the basic premise that you avoid what is bad and embrace what is good. That applies not just to skin care, but to your life in general.

Add to that what you already know about eating right, exercising, getting enough rest, and so on (see Good Skin Care for a refresher lesson) and you’ll give yourself a fabulous foundation for having lifelong healthy skin.

We would add a third factor. Common sense and attaining beautiful, healthy skin go together. But if you want to get that extra boost to getting your skin to look and feel younger, you might want to consider adding a good, all natural skin care product to your skin care regimen.

Look for companies that use the highest quality all natural ingredients in the right proportion and potency. These companies often fly under the radar because  they put more money and effort into developing high quality skin care products than in advertising and marketing.

They also have a large base of satisfied customers and plenty of legitimate testimonials to prove it. Add to that product safety, ease of use and ordering, and affordable prices, and you have a skin care company that will help you reach your skin care goals.
